Mentor Center - April 2018



Mentor Centers provide participants an opportunity to observe experienced TVIs and COMS as they use a variety of strategies and materials with their students on the TSBVI and Austin ISD campuses. Each participant will have the opportunity to observe between 4-6 individual VI professionals a day. Participants also have the option to tour the Criss Cole Rehabilitation Center for adults with visual impairments, located near the TSBVI campus.

Audience: Texas protégés and their mentors, as well as Texas students currently enrolled in the Texas Tech University or Stephen F. Austin State University VI/O&M programs who do not have amentor.

Important Session Information:


The Mentor Program funds:
• Hotel costs for two nights at the Crowne Plaza, 6121 North IH-35 (we make the reservation)
• 1-way travel between your city and Austin
• Airfare for participants who live more than 250 miles from Austin, with prior approval from the Mentor Coordinator
• Rental car in Austin for individuals who fly
• Substitute teacher payment for your district to hire a sub in your absence

To be eligible to attend, you must fit one of these categories:
• You are a student currently working on VI or O&M certification in Texas
• You are a protege matched with a mentor.
• You are a mentor who is currently matched with a protege.

Mentor Center attendance is limited to two times only for any individual:
• Once as a student with TTU/SFA who does not yet teach as a TVI or COMS.
• Once as a protege matched with a mentor.
• Mentors may attend one time per school year with their protege(s).
