Braille Boot Camp is a four day, hands-on, experiential training focused on the development of the knowledge and skills needed to produce braille documents, tactile graphics, and music braille for their students with blindness and visual impairments.
Susan O'Brien and Melinda Hudson will lead participants through both small group and individual activities that include:
• Setting up your computer and software for braille and tactile graphic
production
• Understanding file formats and conversion to editable text
• Developing a workflow that ensures accuracy of translation and
formats
• Translation of literary, foreign language, and math worksheets for
different grade levels
• The tactile graphic workflow and methods of production
• Drawing skills, element placement and document formatting
• Development of templates for commonly used diagrams
• How to use available resources for guidance
An introduction to music braille will include:
• pitches and time value of notes
• other “basic” symbols such as time signatures, measures, and
ending a piece of music
• the octave symbols
• placement of accidentals
• headings, page numbers, and overall format
This training is designed for paraprofessionals and TVIs who are new to
braille, tactile graphic, or music braille production. Participants must attend
all four days.
